TURNING POINT; Ballet East Dance Company’s Spring Production is the exiting of an era
for the emergence of new and innovative works. We are dedicating this production to Fred
Benjamin, an icon in the dance world who passed away this winter in New York City. Mr.
Benjamin worked with and taught generations of dancers throughout the world and especially
at the Alvin Ailey School.
I first met Fred in the 1980’s teaching at Clark Center for the Performing Arts where we developed a professional friendship. In 1992 I invited Mr. Benjamin to create a new work for the Austin audiences, using a technique that he developed that brought together Horton and Graham techniques with a splash of jazz that evolved into the very distinct Fred Benjamin style. This spring Ballet East Dance Company takes great pleasure in announcing the restaging of Fred Benjamin’s “After the Rain,” as a reminder of modern dance’s traditional feel, look and flavor of a bygone era. To usher in a new, innovative, exciting and energetic generation of choreographers, Ballet East also presents Guest Artist Juan Pablo Flores new work – Night
Creatures – along with the works of local choreographers Melissa Villarreal, Andrea Ariel, Julie Nunan and Amberlee Anderson. Turning Point will be present May 8 through 11 at
the Dougherty Arts Center, 1110 Barton Springs Road.
